According to NCBI/ a research at UBC in Vancouver, Canada.. (2015)

  • 1 in 2200 babies are born with Gastroschisis

  • It has increased x3 in the past 10 years

  • Those believed to be at risk:

    1. Younger mothers

    2. Smoking

    3. History of pregestational or gestational diabetes

    4. Use of medication to treat depression

When we found out that she had Gastroschisis our OB told us that there was nothing that I could have done to avoid the condition as there is not enough research on what causes this to develop in early pregnancy.

Of the factors listed above, I am considered a younger mother (21yrs) and I am treated with medication for depression. These two factors could have played a role or they may not have. There are cases where women had none of these factors present in their lives and had Gastro babies.

The biggest challenge so far has been to not blame myself for what is happening to my baby.
